Surrealist Saint

Though the inspirational teacher, a driving force in coming of age fiction and after-school specials, is a novel concept (and one brimming with suspiciously humanistic tendencies), it takes a keen student to pay attention long enough to find one. And, as we well know, keen students are one rare commodity in junior and high school - as are truly inspiration teachers in these days of media propaganda and smut. So the idea of a teacher with a cult following seems rather absurd. Nevertheless, Ann Arbor teacher Sally Ryan has pulled it off with her progressive approach to creativity. And with her artistic alter-ego, SAINTRYAN (TM), Ryan proves herself to be one inspirational lady, indeed. An internationally exhibited artist, Ryan boasts over 30 years worth of surrealistic paintings and drawings. She brings her work back to the locals with an exhibit at Book Beat, The Psychosketchbooks of SAINTRYAN(TM) from September 2 through 29. As well, she will be available to meet from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday , September 2. For more information, call Book Beat at 248-968-3102"
